This is my observation/opinion: in the 3rd generation Pilots, the VCM system is quite smooth and invisible for the first couple of years. Like devmechster said, it's dependent on serval factors - engine temp, engine load, possibly speed. The VCM muzzlers and deletes that people use tricks the engine into thinking it's running a tick under full operating temp and thus, VCM usually wont engage.

I solved my "misfire problem". I thought that I would post this to help others who may be new to the Honda fold. Hopefully, any who are in a similar situation find this post and it will help them to avoid spending $$ on un-necessary diagnosis and repairs. The real issue is what is causing the misfires. The misfires are likely the result of fouled plugs again; this time in cylinders 1 and 4. The plugs are probably getting fouled because of the VCM issue, given that you are already getting misfires in such a short time with fresh plugs.
