If you want your starting village as self sustaining as possible, I'd suggest you build a food and resource storage and don't get soo many workers too fast. You need a barn so you can turn rot into fertilizer. I did it with rotten berries so the villagers could eat the cabbage. 1000 berries give you 100 fertilizer.Npc workers dont need anything to work.
