Velocities and pressures are close to factory as is recoil - 40 grains of IMR3031 will kick a lot harder for little velocity gain. (If you open some brands of factory .45-70 they appear to be loaded with only 15-20 grains of flake or ball powder.I did have an old Hornady manual about 30 years ago that listed 4320 for .45-70. I had started out with a Siamese Mauser conversion in .45-70 using a load of IMR 4227 from the same book for 500 gr. bullets. It was an economical load giving good velocity and being a thirfty lad I decided "less powder, less cost, same velocity".However, I got alot of unburned powder at 52 grains of H-322. Someone told me that H-322 works best with heavier bullets in the 45/70, so I now use IMR 4198 for the 300 grain and 322 for the 405 grain bullet. That's pretty stout for a lever gun. Start with some mouse fart loads, Trail Boss works real well. My Henry doesn't care for really warm loads; the accuracy drops pretty dramatically.
