I take the cable loose at the speedo and hold the end up. It was reading 20 or 30MPH in the garage after re-installing the gear box. I suspected the cable wasn't engaged properly in the square hole in the speedo. It was jammed and applying a force on the works. Re-installed the cable and all was better.
